John A. Harper, 77, of Teaneck and a lifetime area resident passed to eternal rest on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Hackensack Medical Center.
Son of the late John S. and Helen (Holton) Harper, he was born on March 3, 1932 in Teaneck, NJ. John served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and worked as a Quality Control Manager for BMB Fasteners, Inc., in West Paterson, NJ.
He loved golf, watching sports of any kind, Broadway plays with his Cardiac Care Group from Holy Name Hospital, being with family and friends and was always quick with a joke. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is predeceased by his parents John and Helen Harper, his sister, Jean Harper Belinski, and his beloved companion, Jane Paget.
He is survived by his loving children: Helen Marie Gurnari of Waretown, NJ, John Harper and his wife, Rosa, of Manahawkin, NJ, Bonnie Abad of Maybrook, NY, Chris Ann Harper and her husband, Hugh O’Connor of Montgomery, NY, Ted Doherty and his wife, Gail, of Cutler Bay, FL, and Scott Doherty of Oakland, NJ. His sisters, Shirley Baldwin and her husband JC Cavanaugh of Medford, NJ, Marjorie West of Hamilton, MT, and brother Richard Harper and his wife, Aimee, of Piscataway, NJ. He was a loving grandfather to ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and was “Papa John” to the grandchildren and great-grand children of his beloved Jane Paget. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday July 29th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm with a service beginning at 8PM, at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck, NJ 07666, followed by cremation and a private graveside service at a future date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
