Obituary

Alice (McMenamy) Dunphy, 95, formerly of Whitman and Tequesta, Florida, died Tuesday July 21st,surrounded by family at The Guardian Center in Brockton. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward W. Dunphy of Whitman and more recently of the late Theodore F. Schraft of Tequesta, Florida.

Born, raised and educated in North Easton, she was the daughter of Frank J. and Mary (Schindler) McMenamy. A graduate of Brockton Business School, She went on to have a career in retail as New England Manager for Wilbur Rogers stores. During the twenty five years of marriage to Ed Dunphy, she raised two daughters, was a member of the Whitman Republican Town Committee and Whitman Women’s Club. An avid gardener, she became President of the Whitman Garden Club. She took great joy in designing and maintaining her gardens on Plymouth Street, which were often photographed by passer-bys. Volunteering thousands of hours at Brockton Hospital, she earned the distinction of being a grey lady. Alice was a former communicant of Holy Ghost Church of Whitman, where she taught C.C.D. for many years.

From 1967 to 1981, she was employed by Stonehill College in the Development Office and later as Acting Director of Placement/Career Services. Alice is remembered by the alumni as an enthusiastic supporter, her unflagging energy and her kindness. In 1981, she retired to marry Theodore Schraft and subsequently spent winters in Florida but returning in the spring to Whitman.

Devoted mother of Susan (Dunphy) Lawlor of Arlington and Jane (Dunphy) Schwartz of Rockland; loving grandmother of Ryan Lawlor, Eve (Lawlor) Driscoll, Alison (Lawlor) Russell, Elizabeth and James Schwartz and great grandmother to Grace Roisin Lawlor. She is also survived by her brothers James McMenamy of North Easton and Edward McMenamy of Florida. Alice is predeceased by her brothers, Francis, Charlie, Frederick, Louis and John McMenamy, as well as her sisters, Isobel Horrigan and Mary Louise Newman.

Her services will be held on Saturday July 25th at 9:15AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery Whitman. Visitation will be held on Friday July 24th from 4:00-8:00PM.Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer Association MA Chapter, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
