Martha Herod McCook, 84, of Ocilla, Georgia, died Monday, July 20, 2009 at Palemon Gaskins Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday, July 22 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla with Elder Otis McGee and Rev. William Pope officiating. Interment will follow in the Ocilla Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-9 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mrs. McCook was born August 12, 1924 in Irwin County to the late Newt and Bessie Willingham Hudson. She lived in Irwin County most of her life, graduating from Irwin County High School in 1941, where she was a member of the basketball team. Mrs. McCook was a former employee of H& M Grocery and retired in 1986 as Director of the Irwin County Coastal Plains E.O.A after 20 years of service. She was Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Osceola Chapter # 431 in 1963-1964. Mrs. McCook was a member of the Ocilla Primitive Baptist Church.
Mrs. McCook is survived by two daughters: Patricia Herod Lupo and Nelda Herod Vigneri, both of Ocilla; son: Jimmy Herod of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Steven (Wendy) Herod and Dana (Trey) Luckie of Fitzgerald and Traci Lupo of Ocilla and 7 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Jack Herod and Harold F. McCook; 5 brothers: Lonnie Hudson, Buddy Hudson, Newt Hudson, Jr., Jack Hudson and Henry Hudson; 4 sisters: Helen Rogers, Janie Hudson, Ann Tucker, and twin sister, Mary Brooks as well as several nieces and nephews.
