TEWKSBURY: Sarah "Sallie" Celeste Keene Carson, R.N., age 92, a North Tewksbury resident for over 64 years, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009 with her family at her side. She was the beloved wife of Laurence Homer Carson, who passed away on December 16, 1961. Born in Lowell on May 7, 1917, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Dorothy (Trull) Keene. Descendent of Captain John Trull leader of the area Revolutionary Militia. Sallie was raised in Lowell, attended the Moody school and graduated from Lowell High School in 1934. Following graduation, she attended the Lowell General Hospital School of Nursing graduating with the Class of 1938. Mrs. Carson was employed as the night supervisor at Lowell General Hospital for 47 years until her retirement in 1985. This past May 6th Sallie was honored during National Nurses Week by Lowell General Hospital as, what she referred to, "Nurse of the Century". Sallie was a life-long, active member of the First Baptist Church of Tewksbury, where she was member of the Alpha Philatheas Group and the 20 Uppers. She was also a Sunday School teacher, worked on church suppers and an organizer of the annual May Breakfast. She enjoyed many activities including sewing and knitting for her children, especially Christmas stockings for her 'special people'. While she learned the art of quilting she was one of three founders of the Tewksbury Piecemakers quilt guild. Sallie is survived by one son, Laurence Carson of Boston; two daughters, Cynthia A. Carson of Tewksbury and Janet C. Katz of Dunwoody, GA; four grandchildren, Michael (Max) Killen and his husband Chad Armstrong of San Francisco, CA, Matthew Katz and Alexander Katz of Dunwoody, GA, and Meredith Katz of Decorah, IA; one sister, Barbara Foster of Lincoln, RI; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Carson was the sister of the late Charlotte Hartley, Jane Wood, Dorothy Bennett, and George H. Keene,II
Calling hours Tuesday, July 21 from 5-8pm at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral service Wednesday, July 22, at 2pm at the First Baptist Church, 1500 Andover St., Rte. 133, Tewksbury which will preceded by visitation from 1-2pm.
