Obituary

Mystic-Raymond Forrest Hackett, age 83, of Gold Star Highway, formerly of Gales Ferry, peacefully passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009. He was the husband of Phyllis (Cavanaugh) Taylor Hackett.
Born on December 8, 1925 in Portland, Maine, he was the son of Daniel and Harriet (Carr) Hackett.
Raymond often proudly proclaimed he served 22 years in the Navy, worked 22 years at Electric Boat, and looked forward to 22 years of retirement. He enlisted into the submarine service just before his eighteenth birthday and retired a Senior Chief Radioman in 1965 and was a member of the Holland Club. In 1987 he retired from EB as a supervisor in material control and began enjoying his retirement in Florida and Connecticut.
Raymond was an active member of the Ledyard Lions and was presented the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his dedication to serving others. He was an avid Red Sox fan and was always ready to play horseshoes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Penelope Walton of Groton, Daniel Hackett of Norwich, Karen Brown and her husband, Michael of Gales Ferry, William Taylor and his wife, Chris of Pawcatuck and Robert Taylor and his wife, Kelly of Dayville; grandchildren, Christopher Walton, Eric Walton and his wife Tracey, Sarah Zitzmann and her husband Charles, Daniel Hackett, Michael Blanchard, Julie Taylor, Ashley Taylor, and Austin Taylor.
Raymond was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth Jerry McCarthy Hackett.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday at St. Patrick Church, East Main St., Mystic. Private entombment will be at St. Mary's Mausoleum, New London. There are no visiting hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ledyard Lions Club, PO Box 404, Gales Ferry CT 06335.
