Harkness, Marjorie
Marjorie Ailstock Harkness, 87, of Summerville, widow of Chaplain Allen J. Harkness died Monday, July 13, 2009 at Trident Medical Center.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 2 o’clock at the Charleston Air Force Base. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memory Gardens, Summerville.
Friends may visit James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville from 6 until 8 o’clock Wednesday evening.
She was born April 25, 1922 in Mt. Hope, West Virginia, a daughter of Biney L. Ailstock and Nettie Patterson Ailstock. She was a graduate of Covington High School, Covington, VA; Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC; and Meredith College, Raleigh, NC. She received her Masters degree from Southeastern Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. She was a teacher, homemaker, and community volunteer. She taught Sunday school for nearly 70 years, most recently the Voyager class at the Charleston Air Force Base Chapel.
Surviving are:
Daughter: Betty Allen Harkness Mitchell (Ed) of Fayetteville, Georgia,
Grandson: Joshua Hicks of Asheville, NC
Brother: Manuel Ailstock of West Virginia and Florida.
She was predeceased by her son: Perry Binkley Harkness and her adoptive parents: Perry M. and Mary P. Nicely.
