George P. Doucette 89 years of Brockton died Thursday morning in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton. George was the son of the late George and Ethel (Weber) Doucette. He was born in Brockton and raised in both Brockton and Taunton; graduating from Taunton HS class of 1938. He returned to Brockton 51 years ago.
Immediately after graduation he worked as a truck driver until he entered the Army at the age of 21 and proudly served our country during WWII in the 29th Infantry Division, 175th Regiment. He landed on Omaha Beach during Operation Overlord on D Day June 6th 1944 and was part of the patrol to find plans that enabled the 3rd Army to break out of Breast, France. George received the Bronze Star for Valor in these actions. He is the last surviving member of the three infantrymen that lived through the D Day invasion and the European Campaign from his original infantry company. He is a lifetime member of the Whitman VFW post 697
Following the service he once again worked as a truck driver and went to work for the former H.M. Gould Co in Walpole and retired at the age of 62 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Teamsters local 25 and local 653 Retirement Club.
After retirement and to stay active George took up small engine repair and could be found fixing lawnmowers and the like for neighbors and family. He loved to care for his home but most enjoyed the time spent with his son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and their families; often with stories of his youth time spent in the Military and the many places he experienced while traveling on the road. He loved his travels and had amazing recall to the directions and places he had visited.
He was the husband of the late Ruth (Litchfield) Doucette and is survived by his son Roger P. and his wife Adele (Castignetti) of Brockton; his brother Bernard of Brockton, and the late Theresa Brady, Francis and George; his grandsons George P. and his wife Heather, Lee J. and his wife Lisa all of E. Bridgewater, Roger J. and his wife Michelle of Weymouth and James C. of Brockton. His great grandchildren Jake, Emma, Alexis, Logan, Evan and Brody.
