Joseph M. “Joe” Cummings, beloved husband of Susanne (Conley) Cummings, died on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at his home in Simsbury, CT. He was born in Montclair, NJ on June 13, 1925, the son of the late Martin and Delia Cummings. In addition to Susanne and his sister Madelyn Fitzgerald of Upper Montclair, NJ, he is survived by four sons and their families: Mark and Marta Rodriguez of Dana Point, CA, Paul and Karen Tolan and their sons Derek and Brendan of West Simsbury, Neil and Cathy (LaVigne) and their sons Reed, Conley, and Owen of Simsbury, and Tony and Natasha Litchfield and their daughters Emmagen and Eliana of Yungaburra, Australia.
He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, Class of ’49, and was a member of the football team which played in the 1946 Orange Bowl. He and Sue moved to Simsbury in 1957 where they have lived for the past 52 years. He was a founding member of the Simsbury High School athletics Booster Club and continued to support local high school sports. He was an active member of St. Patrick – St. Anthony Church in Hartford, where he served as the head usher of the 8 am Sunday Mass. He was a manufacturers representative for women’s apparel throughout the Northeast.
Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton, July 2, from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, July 3, 10:30 am at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Church, 285 Church Street, Hartford. Private burial will be in Simsbury Cemetery at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick – St. Anthony Church.
