Max Edwin Dukes, Sr. 80, of Summerville, husband of Norma Jean Smith Dukes, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Trident Medical Center.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 2 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens, N. Charleston. Friends may visit at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville from 1 until the hour of service on Thursday.

Max was born September 28, 1928 in Stillmore, GA, son of the late Madison and Hattie Mae Edenfield Dukes. He was a graduate of schools in Georgia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1948 until 1952. He was a former mason with the Dorchester Lodge. He retired as a pipefitter and was a member Old Fort Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are:
1 son: Michael O. Dukes (Nancy) of N. Charleston.
4 grandchildren: James, Paul, Susan Renee’ and Melissa.
1 great grandson: Brandon.
1 sister: June Hooks (Wendel) of Swainesboro, GA.
Daughter-in-law: Dolores Dukes Blanchette of N. Charleston.
He was predeceased by his son: Max Edwin “Eddie” Dukes, Jr., 1 brother and 2 sisters: “Pete” Dukes, Marguerite Lawrence and M.O.Gene Sparks. Several nieces and nephews.
