Obituary

Stephanie Marseilles, age 96, of 7 Bruggemann Court, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009 at home.

Stephanie was born May 17, 1913 in Moodus, Connecticut, the daughter of Andrew and Jadwiga Koral Marszalek. As a young child she lived in Three Rivers, Massachusetts, then in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where she attended local schools.

After high school, Stephanie worked as a nanny and housekeeper in Longmeadow and Springfield, Massachusetts and in Canaan, New Hampshire and Groton Long Point, Connecticut. She met her husband, Louis Marseilles at Groton Long Point; they were married in 1938 in Canaan, New Hampshire. They had been married for 66 years when he died in 2004.

Stephanie moved to Mystic in November of 1938. She worked as a waitress at the Modern Grill Restaurant, then became head dietician at Broadway School and Mystic Junior High School, where she was employed for many years. She was galley cook for Mariner and Sea Scouts aboard the youth training ship Joseph Conrad at Mystic Seaport Museum, manager of the former Cottrell Gift Shop in Mystic and worked in sales at the Irish Shoppe in Olde Mystic Village.

Stephanie was a charter member and past president of the Auxiliary to the Hugo A. Simonelli Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3263. While active in VFW activities, she planned, coordinated and organized many receptions, dinners, and parties, in addition to her other duties. She volunteered as a Brownie Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a member of The Knitting Club for 65 years, and a charter member of the Over the Hill Caterers and the Cottrell Gang. She was an avid gardener and an accomplished cook and baker. She was a caring and compassionate mother, grandmother and friend who will be dearly missed by those close to her.

Stephanie is survived by her daughter, Susan Yacovino, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, her son, Louis Marseilles, Jr. of Preston, Maryland, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mary Marszalek, of Chicopee, Massachusetts. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many special friends, including Knitting Club members Irene Burrows of Noank and Thelma Ashbey of Mystic. The world has definitely been made better by her presence.

A memorial service will be held at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Saturday, June 27, at 11:00am with burial following at Elm Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hugo A. Simonelli Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3263 Auxiliary, Carolyn Foley, Treasurer, P. O. Box 111, Mystic CT 03655.
