Rooney, Gertrude (McNally) of Duxbury formerly of Winchester died June 20, at the age of 89. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Charles E. Rooney. Loving mother of seven daughters, Joan Shea and her husband Harry of Duxbury and Marshfield, Martha Rooney of Bridgewater, Marilyn Soboski of Carver (formerly Winchester), Patricia Simons and her husband Jeff of Duxbury, Eileen Kimmett and her husband Robert of Winchester, Mary Regina Cleary of Winchester and the late Janet Rooney. She was the loving grandmother of, Kathleen, Charlie, Jacqui, Diane, Kevin, Ainsley, Michael, Patrick, Keith, Brenden, Michelle and Cory. Gertrude reached out to her many nieces and nephews and was a surrogate mother and grandmother to many.
Her entire life was dedicated to her family, Church and helping others. Her volunteering began during WW II as a nurse assistant and an Air Raid Warden in Winchester. She was a founder of the Massachusetts Medical Society/Alliance and the Middlesex East District Alliance and was an active member for over 60 years. She worked endlessly at St Mary’s Parish (Winchester) and was instrumental in keeping the Parish school open. Gertrude was a member of Marshfield Country Club, Green Harbor Yacht Club, Holy Family Church (Duxbury), Our Lady of the Assumption Church (Green Harbor) and St Mary’s Church (Winchester). She and her husband were avid supporters of Boston College Football and Hockey.
Funeral from the MacDonald Funeral Home 1755 Ocean St (Rte 139) Marshfield, Wednesday at 8:45 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Church, Tremont St, Duxbury, MA at 10:00 am.
Visiting hours Tuesday 4 to 8 pm.
Interment will be in the Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
