TEWKSBURY - Leroy F. “Roy” Patterson, age 80, a retiree of N.E. Telephone/NYNEX, diedMonday morning, July 21, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell after a brief illness. Hewas the husband of Barbara (Penney) Patterson, who died in 1987.
He was born in Tewksbury, August 11, 1922, the son of the late Harold and Mildred (Pringle)Patterson, and was a lifelong resident of the town.
During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army, as a bugler. He earned many decorations includingtwo bronze stars for participation in battles at Luzon and the Southern Philippines.
After discharge from the Army, he returned to Tewksbury where he worked briefly for the Townof Tewksbury Highway Department. He joined the New England Telephone buildingmaintenance department, and retired from its successor company, NYNEX .Prior to the formation of a permanent fire department in the Town of Tewksbury, he proudly served asa call firefighter.
He was host to numerous foster children throughout his married life, and was also a lifelongbooster and fan of Tewksbury youth sports.
He was also a member of the Tewksbury Congregational Church.
He is survived by four sons and their spouses, Roy E. and his wife Susan (Watson) Patterson ofTewksbury, Barry W. and his wife Sharon (Dobois) Patterson of Haverhill, Charles E. and hisfiancé, Dawn Spaulding of Billerica, Roland T. and his wife Jacqueline (Millette) Patterson, 10grandchildren, Stephen, Leland, Stephanie, and Joshua Patterson all of Tewksbury, DanielPatterson of Dracut, Kaitlin Patterson, Paul and Kerry Lamarche all of Billerica, Keith Williams ofNH, Kevin Williams of OH, and three great grandchildren, Timothy Patterson, Sherri and HunterWilliams.
He was also father of the late Sandra Williams, brother of the late Harry Patterson, HerbertPatterson, Alice Sargeant, and grandfather of the late Alicia Dobois.
His funeral was held Thursday, July 24. Interment with Army Honors was held at TewksburyCemetery.
