Shirley H. (Howker) Matthews, 88 of Medfield formerly of Fairhaven, died June 9 in the Thomas Upham House in Medfield after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Stanley Matthews who died in 1988.
Born in Lowell, august 17, 1920, Shirley grew up in Somersworth, New Hampshire and attended the University of New Hampshire. She was one of the first graduates in the newly instituted Bachelor of Science Nursing Program at UNH.
Shirley lived in Medford for many years and worked at several hospitals in the Boston area before retiring to Fairhaven. She and Stanley were enthusiastic members of the Appalachian Mountain Club and enjoyed traveling worldwide.
Sister of the late John James Howker, she leaves her sister-in-law Priscilla Howker of Medway, nephews and nieces John A. Howker of Kentucky, Thomas Howker of Maine, Martha Judson of Colorado and Lorna Clark of Maine.
Funeral services and interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Animal Rescue League of New Bedford, 31 Ventura Drive, Dartmouth Mass 02714.
