Michael A. Stefanik, 97, a resident of the Laurels in Peckville, died Wednesday evening at the Inpatient Unit of VNA Hospice at Community Medical Center.
Born April 6, 1913, in Olyphant, son of the late Andrew and Mary Balog Stefanik, he was educated in Olyphant schools. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and attained the rank of sergeant. He served with Company D, 368th Engineers General Service Regiment in Northern France and the Rhineland. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with two bronze stars. Before retirement, he was employed by Anheuser-Bush Co. in Newark, N.J. He retired 30 years ago and became a resident of Olyphant for the second time. He excelled at sports and was an avid golfer and bowler. He also enjoyed going to yard sales.
Surviving are a nephew and good friend, Michael Stefanik, Peckville.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Andrew, Albert and George; and a sister, Mary Gardner.
The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home, 129 Grant St., Olyphant, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in Holy Ghost Church, Olyphant, to be celebrated by Monsignor Stanley W. Piorkowski. Interment, Valley View Cemetery, Jermyn.
