Lawana Harper Batson, 89, formerly of Clarksville, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at her daughter's residence in Mandeville, LA. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Neal-Tarpley Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 12 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born October 1, 1919 in Cumberland Furnace (Sweet Home), TN, one of nine children of Allen Harper and Ethel Jobe Harper. A 1936 graduate of Charlotte High School, she worked as a secretary in Nashville until her marriage in 1957 to Richard Rhodes Batson, at which time she moved to Cocoa, FL and worked at Patrick AFB. She moved to Clarksville in 1973 and worked as a budget analyst at Ft. Campbell, KY until retiring in 1984. She was a faithful member of Madison Street Church of Christ and enjoyed sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and quilting. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa White, granddaughter Kelsey White, son-in-law Jonathan White, all of Mandeville, Louisiana; sisters Sara (Bill) Register and Ruth Warren of Nashville; brothers Richard Harper and Tom (Carol) Harper of Clarksville; and many nieces and nephews.
