Obituary

SALEM - Theodore M. “Teddy” Solovicos, 93, of Salem, husband of Jennie (Antczak) Solovicos, died Wednesday morning, June 3, 2009 at the Beverly Hospital following a short illness.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Emanuel and Margaret (Kilpatrick) Solovicos. He was a lifelong resident of the city and a member of the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. He was a long time member of the masons as well as the IOOF, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Fraternity Lodge #118, both of Salem

In his younger years, Teddy worked for his father in the family business, Martha Sweets, then located on Essex Street, across for Jerry’s Army & Navy Store. From the late 1950's until 1960, he owned and operated Ted’s Martha Sweets on Essex Street, across form the Hawthorne Hotel. He went on to manage the Cue & Billiards Pool Hall on Lafayette Street. By the mid 1960's he worked as a court officer for Essex County, based mostly in the Salem District and Superior Courts until his retirement in 1979.

Teddy was an avid sports fan. He was a basketball coach for the Salem Recreation League, starting with the Hot Shots in the early 1950's, then coaching the Ted’s Martha Sweet team from the mid 1950's to the mid 1960's. As a baseball coach, he coached the Jays in the Pony League. For his many years of service to the city, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the City of Salem. He also enjoyed playing tennis and was a member of the former United Shoe Country Club in Beverly.

Besides his wife, with whom he shared 72 years of marriage, he is survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Manly T. and Ruby Solovicos of Melbourne, FL, Theodore M. Solovicos, Jr of Salem, James T. and Joanne Solovicos of Peabody, 6 grandchildren, Mark Solovicos of San Francisco, CA, Chase Solovicos of Hollywood, CA, Shannon Luis of Peabody, Julie Solovicos of Danvers, Christina Solovicos of York, ME, Angela Solovicos of Northwood, NH, 1 great grandchild, Emma Luis of Peabody and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late James M. Solovicos, Elizabeth White and Arety Pero.

His funeral service will be held Friday morning, June 5, 2009 at 11 AM in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Memorial Fund of the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 24 St. Peter St., Salem, MA 01970.
