Obituary

Westport - Lawrence Woodman Bennett (Larry), 83, of Westport, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Somerset Ridge after a brief period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Pauline Avis (Nelson) Bennett. He had lived in Westport for 58 years.

Lawrence was a WW II veteran, having served as a signalman in the Navy on the aircraft carrier Midway. He graduated from Fairhaven High School and Ryder College in New Jersey with a degree in Business Administration. He was employed by Continental Screw Company in New Bedford for 27 years, and then did accounting and boat settlements for various commercial fishing operations.

Mr. Bennett was born and raised in Fairhaven. He was the son of Clarence W. Bennett and Margaret L. (Lawrence) Bennett, and brother of the late Mary Goupil and the late Bradley H. Bennett, both of Fairhaven. He is survived by his daughter, Melissa B. Gell and her husband, William Gell, and his son, Christopher Bennett, all of Westport, four granddaughters, Sarah V. Gell of Washington, D.C., Betsy L. Gell of New York City, Nicole Bennett of Brighton, Danielle Bennett of Dartmouth, and several nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was a member of the Westport Shellfish Association, the Noquochoke Masons, and the USS Midway Veterans. He loved the town of Westport, watching wildlife, bird-watching, and spending time with his friends and family.

All are welcome to attend Calling Hours Saturday, June 6th at the Potter Funeral Home from 10:00 A.M.-12:00 PM with a brief service to follow.
