William R. Cross, 83

William R. Cross, 83, a lifelong resident of Mansfield passed away on Friday May 29, 2009 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare Center in Norton. He was the beloved husband of Gladys S. (Schofield) Cross.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 25, 1925 he was a son of the late Albert S. and Dorothy (Ramspott) Cross.
Bill grew up in Mansfield and was a graduate of Mansfield High School. During WWII he proudly served his country in the United States Army. On March 14, 1946 he was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class.
Prior to retiring 18 years ago, Mr. Cross was employed for the Mansfield School Department for 10 years as a school bus driver. He had also owned his own sign painting company and had worked at the former Fuller’s Hardware in Mansfield and when younger had sold school equipment for the Brunswick Co. in Michigan.
Bill’s hobbies included playing golf, playing pool and painting. He had attended the Orthodox Congregational Church in Mansfield and treasured the times spent with family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years he was the devoted father of Debra C. McKenna and her husband Scott of Coventry, Rhode Island and the late Jacqueline C. Cullen. He was the brother of A. Stanley Cross of Charleston, South Carolina and Elinor Vernon of Palm Harbor, Florida. Mr. Cross is also survived by his adoring grandchildren Carlton McKenna of Rhode Island and Matthew Cullen, William Cullen, Julia Bresette and Catherine Cullen all of Wisconsin as well as 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend committal services with military honors on Monday June 8th at 1:00 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours have been omitted.
