Obituary

Plymouth – Louise (Pegnam) McCarthy 81, formerly of Norwell, Green Harbor and Whitman died Wednesday May 27th in her Plymouth home. She was the beloved wife for 55 years of Edward R. McCarthy.

Born in Boston and raised in Whitman she was the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Marian S. (Spellman) Pegnam, and a graduate of Jeanne d’Arc Academy Class of 1946.

She graduated in 1950 from the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, NY and went on to work as a social worker for Foundley Hospital in New York.

Louise was a former member of the Norwell Community Club, the Green Harbor Yacht Club, and the Marshfield Country Club.

She enjoyed her family, traveling and being at the sea shore.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her children Carol (McCarthy) Macguire of Duxbury, Margaret (McCarthy) Bonitatibus of Whitman, and John McCarthy of Scituate, her sister Frances (Pegnam) McCarthy of Duxbury, her nieces and nephews William, Richard, Frank and Paul McCarthy and Christine Doran, Ann Joyce, and Julie Keir. She is also survived by several grandchildren, and many grand nieces and grand nephews. She was the mother of the late Clare (McCarthy) Fenton and Michael J. McCarthy, sister of the late Martin, Arthur J., and Rev. Capt. John S. Pegnam, Mary P. Henry and Eleanor P. McGrath, sister-in-law of the late William and Thomas McCarthy, Sister Viterbo McCarthy, SJ and Sister Margaret William McCarthy, SJ.

Her funeral service will be held Tuesday June 2 at 9:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a mass at 10 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Monday June 1 from 3 – 8 PM.
