Lewis T. Scanlan, 79, of Derry, NH, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 in the West Roxbury VA Hospital, W. Roxbury, MA. Mr. Scanlan was born in Boston, MA on December 25, 1929, a son of the late Frank and Muriel (Slight) Scanlan. He grew up in Boston and spent many years there working as a sanitation engineer. Mr. Scanlan served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. During the 1960's he purchased a camp on Beaver Lake in Derry and enjoyed spending summer's there with his family. He eventually moved to Derry in 1976 and opened up Val's Variety in Derry. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. Mr. Scanlan enjoyed watching TV, especially any sporting event he could find on. He enjoyed going out to breakfast with his friends on Sundays, going to the Work Out Club and swimming. Most of all, he loved and adored his grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Scanlan of Hyde Park, MA, Steven Scanlan of Boston, a daughter, Linda Gilcreast of Derry, 11 grandchildren and by many nieces and nephews. Coming from a family of 14 siblings, he is survived by some brothers and sisters and was predeceased by some brothers and sisters.
Following cremation, memorial calling hours were held from 2-4pm on Sunday, May 31, 2009 in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Military honors were held in the funeral home at 4pm to conclude the calling hours.
