Thomas Ewell Hatcher, Jr., 89, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Sunday, May 24, at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Couey and Rev. Henry Tyson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-9 Saturday evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Hatcher was born May 14, 1920 in Crisp County to the late Thomas E. and Ethel Hutchins Hatcher. He graduated from Pitts High School in 1939 and attended Freeman Business College in Albany. Mr. Hatcher served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was stationed on Saipan. He moved to Fitzgerald in 1950 and was a retired agent for the United States Treasury Audit Division, retiring after 37 years of service. After retiring he worked another 22 years for the accounting firm of Meeks, Roberts, Ashley, Sumner and Sirmans. Mr. Hatcher was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a former member of the First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Elks Club, an avid fisherman and gardener.
Mr. Hatcher is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty McMullen Hatcher of Fitzgerald; children, Thomas E. (Linda) Hatcher, III of Fitzgerald; Katy (Bubba) Hopkins of Osierfield, Sue H. (Gary) Smith and Henry (Charlene) Hatcher, all of Fitzgerald; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters and two brothers.
