Obituary

William A. Flaherty, 57, of Mattapoisett died July 10, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was the husband of Elizabeth Joan (Woodcock) Flaherty and son of the late Ambrose S. and Kathleen (Gavin) Flaherty.

Born in Pawtucket, RI, he spent most of his life in Mattapoisett, summering there as a child, and moving there permanently in his adult years. He was a graduate of the University of Detroit, as well as the Williams College School of Banking. After serving as the Senior Vice President of Commercial Loans at the New Bedford Institution for Savings (NBIS) for eight years, he took the position of Vice President of Commercial Loans at Plymouth Savings Bank, where he has been for the past six years.

Mr. Flaherty dedicated much of his time to improving the New Bedford area, serving on the board of the New Bedford Industrial Foundation, as well as on the New Bedford Chamber of Commerce.

An avid boater, Mr. Flaherty was a member of the Mattapoisett Yacht Club and filled much of his spare time on his boat the Jolly Tar. He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett.

Survivors include his widow; 2 daughters, Megan Elizabeth Flaherty and Mary Kathleen Flaherty, both of Mattapoisett; a son, Timothy William Flaherty of Mattapoisett; 2 sisters, Kathleen McGowan of Venice, FL and Susan Flaherty of Lincoln, RI; a brother, Martin Flaherty of New York, NY; many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Stephen Flaherty.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6) MattapoisettMonday, July 14th at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Anthony's Church, Mattapoisett at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Sunday, July 13th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.

Interment St. Anthony's Cemetery.
