Joseph S. Hughes, 87, of Hampstead formerly of Atkinson, passed away on
Saturday May 9, 2009 in Derry New Hampshire due to complications from a
long illness.
He was born in Watertown, MA, and was a resident of Hampstead, NH, formerly of Boxborough, MA.
Mr. Hughes was a Flight Engineer for Pan American Airlines for twenty-four years. He was actively involved in the Derry-Salem Elks Lodge in Salem, NH. Joseph was an educator at East Coast Aero-tech. He volunteered as a fireman in Boxboro
Massachusetts for many years. During his retirement he captained the
Canobie Queen at Canobie Lake Park in Salem New Hampshire. In his
earlier years he enjoyed sailing as well as vacationing his winters in Florida.
Joseph was preceded in death by his son Lance Corporal Paul Hughes.
He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years,

5 children: Carol Gallagher and her husband John,
Michael Hughes and his wife Darlene, Patricia Lowden, Joan Maier and
her husband Bill, Jack West and his wife Gloria. He is also survived by
ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at a later date. There are no calling hours.
