Obituary

Philip “Pete” Manchester, Jr., 82, of Westport passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Sophie (Lepianka) Manchester.

Born in Fall River, son of the late Philip Manchester, Sr. and the late Dorothy (Albert) Manchester, he had lived in Westport for most of his life. A graduate of Westport High School, he also graduated from the Bradford Durfee Technological Institute. A veteran of WWII, he served his country in the United States Army. Mr. Manchester was the owner / operator of the Sparrow Hawk lobster boat until his retirement and had worked in the textile industry prior to becoming a commercial lobsterman.

Including his wife, survivors include 2 daughters: Martha Manchester of Westport and Kathy A. Tansey of Dartmouth; 3 brothers: Alan T. Manchester of Westport, Richard G. Manchester of Westport and Dean S. Manchester of FL; a sister: Edith M. Peckham of Westport; 2 granddaughters: Shannon X. Tansey and Meagan Z. Tansey; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Westport Fishermen’s Association, PO Box 83, Westport Point, MA 02791.
