B. Lorraine (Hall) Smith, 90, formerly of Whitman, died on April 16 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late Carleton G. Smith, to whom she was married for 62 years.
She was born in Whitman to Bernard and Gertrude (Andrews) Hall. After Gertrude's death in 1919, Lorraine was raised by Bernard and Mary (Hinkley) Hall. She graduated from Whitman High School in the Class of 1935.
She graduated from Simmons College in 1940 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She taught in the Brockton schools from 1941 to 1945, and later in the Whitman school system until her retirement in 1976.
As a lifelong resident of Whitman, Lorraine was a member of the First Congregational Church, where she served on various committees. She was a member of the Everson Class, the Chi Kappas, and the Whitman Women's Club. She valued her time spent with family and friends. Over the years her interests included bowling, knitting, doing puzzles, and traveling. She was a loyal fan of the Red Sox her whole life.
Lorraine is survived by her daughters Jeanne Gale and her husband Gregory of Hanover and Nancy Bates and her husband Donald of Harwich, her son Paul Smith and his fiancée Sue of South Portland, ME, and 5 grandchildren: Justin, Caitlin and her fiancé Kyle, Alex, Christopher, and Emily. She was the sister of Ruth Harley of Sandwich and the late Phyllis Ralston of Yarmouthport. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday May 2 from 1 PM until the time of the memorial service at 2 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman. In lieu of flowers donations in her name may be made to the First Congregational Church of Whitman, 519 Washington Street, Whitman, or to the charity of one’s choice.
