Obituary

SALEM: John J. Boyle, 76, retired teacher and school administrator, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 in the Salem Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Beverly on September 16, 1932, he was the son of the late John and Frances (Mullin) Boyle. He was a lifelong resident of Beverly and Salem. He was a graduate of Beverly High School class of 1952. In 1956 he received a Bachelors of Education from Salem State College.
John was a school teacher and administrator in Beverly, Andover and Newburyport for thirty-six years before his retirement in 1999. He also served as the Assistant Principal of the Briscoe Middle School in Beverly.
For seventeen years, from 1959-1976, he was a member of the Beverly School Committee. An active member and Past-President of the Beverly Teacher’s Association, he played the role of toastmaster at many retirement events. Although, primarily an educator, John pursued two exciting business ventures, as the owner of the Butcher Boy Steakhouse in Andover and the Dairy Queen on Cabot Street in Beverly.
John is survived by three cousins, Mary Jane Dubuc of Falls Church, Virginia, Jo-Ellen Zawada of Orlando, Florida and George H. Lowe of Syracuse, New York and their ten children. He also leaves many dear friends throughout the area, in particular on Pickering Wharf in Salem where he resided, including an especially dear friend, Diana McKanas of Pickering Wharf.
His funeral services will be privately held at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Beverly Retired Teachers’ Association Scholarship Fund, c/o Tom Tanous, 5 Eaton Rd., Wenham, MA 01984.
