George Mullen, a 15 year resident of Melrose and former longtime resident of Arlington, died on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at his home in Melrose following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 86 years old.
George was born in Cambridge on June 25, 1922. He grew up in Arlington where he attended Arlington Public Schools and graduated from Arlington High School. He enlisted into The United States Navy on December 15, 1942 and served his country during World War II. He was discharged on November 4, 1945 with the rank of Aviation Ordnanceman, Second Class. George also served in the Naval Reserves for more than 40 years. He worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and held several positions before retiring as an auditor after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Logan V.F.W. Post # 6800 of Somerville and the B.P.O.E. Lodge # 2572 of Orleans.
George is the beloved and loving husband of 60 years to S. Marie (Rush) Mullen. He is the devoted father of Debra McLaughlin and her husband Edward of Mashpee and Robert Mullen and his wife Toni of Malaysia. He is the loving Grandpa to Keri Johnson, Jin Mullen, Tod Mullen and his great-grandaughter; Colleen Johnson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is the brother of the late Edward, Harold, William, Walter and Chester Mullen.
George's Funeral will be held on Monday, April 20, 2009, at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main Sreet, Melrose, followed by his Funeral Mass in The Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main Street, Wakefield, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, April 19, 2009, from 2 to 6 p.m. Burial will take place at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne at a later date.
