J. Marie Shields 94 years old, of Brockton, died Sunday April 12, 2009 surrounded by her family at the Good Samaritan Medical Center after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late J. Francis “Grin” Shields. Marie was born and raised in Brockton a daughter of the late John and Nora (Toomey) Hallisey and remained a lifelong resident of the city. Following her graduation from St. Patrick High School she attended Burdett Business School in Boston.
Before her marriage Marie worked at the Social Security Administration and returned when her children were in school. She retired as contact representative after many years with the agency.
In her retirement years Marie enjoyed winters in Stuart, Florida and summer vacations at Loon Mountain, New Hampshire. She was an avid reader and had been a member of the Brockton Country Club, the 20th Century Catholic Club and the Charity Guild. Marie was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret Church and more recently Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
She was the mother of John Shields and his wife Rita Farry of Cumberland, Maine and Nancy Kollman and her husband Jack Kollman, Jr. of Menlo Park, California and the late Charles Shields. She is survived by four grand children Sasha and Christopher Kollman and Chloe and Miles Shields. She was the sister of Margaret “Peg” Handy of W. Bridgewater and the late William, James and Daniel Shields, Elizabeth Brady and Kay Giardino. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Margaret Shields of Whitman and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton Thursday at 10:30 am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-7 pm.
