James E. Schierloh
Former Chairman of HUBCO, Inc.
James E. Schierloh of Oradell and Normandy Beach died Saturday, April 11.
He was born on October 18, 1929 in Hackensack to John and Agnes (Dougan) Schierloh.
Jim was a graduate of the Peddie School in Hightstown and Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA. He graduated from Lehigh in 1951 with a business degree and was also a member of the Psi Upsilon and Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternities.
After college, Jim enlisted in the US Army. He was a member of the 25th Infantry Division, serving from 1951-1953. He was stationed in Korea and earned the rank of Sergeant First Class.
Mr. Schierloh was a Certified Public Accountant, first working with Touche Ross and later Price Waterhouse before joining his father’s accounting practice in 1959. He became a partner with his father in 1963. The firm, Schierloh and Schierloh, specialized in municipal and bank audits as well as personal accounting. He held membership in the Bergen County Chapter of the New Jersey Society of CPA’s and the Registered Municipal Accountants Association, serving as president of each organization. He was also director of Pascack Valley Hospital in the 1970s through the 1980s, serving as their Treasurer for a number of years.
In 1990, after serving twenty-five years as a director of Hudson United Bank, Mr. Schierloh assumed the role of Chairman of the Board. He continued in the role, helping to expand the holdings of the bank through 1998. He continued to serve as Chairman Emeritus until the bank was sold to TD Bank of Canada.
Jim was a member of the Hackensack Golf Club, Normandy Beach Yacht Club and served as Treasurer of the Normandy Beach Improvement Association. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed motor boating and sailing on Barnegat Bay, and collecting stamps. He was especially fond of jazz music.
Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann (Appleton). Also surviving are son John and daughter-in-law Blanche (Costa); daughter Janet and son-in-law Reese Howard; daughter Elizabeth (Betsey) and son-in-law Jason Maltby; grandchildren Annie, Tim, Sean, Megan and James.
Family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Volk Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell (201-261-1088). A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home with a brief ceremony to follow at the Garden State Crematory in North Bergen.
