James C. "Big J" Sabbag of Bedford passed away April 5, 2009. He was 80 years old.
Born and raised in Somerville, James graduated Somerville High School in 1946 and immediately enlisted in the US Army, serving in Japan from 1946 to 1948. Following the war, James worked in the family grocery store in Harvard Square in Cambridge and in a family restaurant in Kenmore Square. In 1966 James opened Big J's in South Boston. Later he would open Big J's in Quincy and Medford. He retired in 2002.
James was the dear and devoted husband of Barbara (Shallah). Loving father of Daniel Sabbag and his wife Rosetta of Bedford, Thomas Sabbag and his wife Sheri of Millis, and James Sabbag and his wife Ruth of Hull. Cherished grandfather “Gido” of Erik, Jamie, Rachael, Victoria, and Emily Sabbag and Kristin Kaufman. Great-grandfather of Dylan, Elias, and James. Dear brother of Marjorie Haddad of Arlington, Albert Sabbag of WV, and the late Alice Salhaney, Linda Abbott, George Sabbag, Nicholas Sabbag and Arthur Sabbag. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
James' Funeral Service will be held in the Church of St. John of Damascus, 300 West St. (Rte 135W at Rte 95/128 Exit 17) DEDHAM Wednesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours in the Church Tuesday 4-8 p.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions in James’ memory may be made to the Church.
Interment Fairview Cemetery, Hyde Park.
