SEWELL, NJ- Carleton W. Boutwell, Jr., age 83, a resident of Sewell, NJ for the past two years, formerly of Tewksbury and Woburn, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at home, with his family by his side.
He was the husband of the Rev. Carole (Perry) Boutwell, former Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Tewksbury, with whom he would have celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on July 1st.
Born in Woburn on April 26, 1925, he was the son of the late Carleton W. and Dagmar (Miller) (Boutwell) Campbell.
Carleton was raised in Woburn, attended Woburn schools and graduated from Woburn High School in 1942.
Following graduation, he began a 20+ year career in the U.S. Navy during which time he saw active duty during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
Carleton was awarded numerous decorations for his military service.
Mr. Boutwell was honorably discharged from active duty on June 30, 1974, having achieved the rank of Lt. Commander.
Following his retirement from the military, he was employed as unit coordinator for the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for four years and later worked as a manager for the Duracell Corporation formerly of Needham until his retirement in 1990.
Mr. Boutwell resided in Woburn for over 70 years and Tewksbury for 10 years until moving to Sewell, NJ in 2007.
Carleton was a 50 year active member of the First Baptist Church of Woburn and later affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Tewksbury and the First Baptist Church of Moorestown, NJ. He was an active and dedicated member of his church and served on numerous committees, boards and church organizations.
Mr. Boutwell was a member of the Massachusetts Military Masonic Lodge, Major General Henry Knox Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Boston and an affiliate member of the Woburn Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. and the Wamesit Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Tewksbury.
In addition to his wife, Carole, he is survived by two sons, Carleton W. Boutwell, III and his wife Nancy of Woburn and Ronald C. Boutwell and his wife Jodi of Merrimack, NH; one daughter, Beth Boutwell Hendricks of Woburn; two step-sons, David H. Simpkins and his wife Elizabeth of Burlington, NJ and Joseph S. Simpkins and his wife Jacqueline of Media, PA; two sisters, Joyce E. Davarich and her husband Louis of Reading and Janice E. Pandolph and her husband Anthony of Woburn; his sister-in-law, Patricia Boutwell of Woburn; his brother-in-law; Arthur Perry and his wife Carol of Wenonah, NJ; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Boutwell was the brother of the late Charles A. Boutwell.
Calling hours Tuesday, April 7th from 4-8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral service Wednesday, April 8th, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1500 Andover St., Rte. 133, Tewksbury. Interment services at 2:30 p.m. at Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church of Woburn, 380 Main St., Woburn, MA 01807 or to the First Baptist Church of Tewksbury, 1500 Andover St., Tewksbury, MA 01876 are suggested.
