John R. Sylvia, Jr., 79 of New Bedford died March 24, 2009 at home after a period of declining health.
He was the husband of Claire M. (Lariviere) Sylvia.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late John and Louise (Carr) Sylvia, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was formerly employed by New England Telephone for 35 years until retirement and was a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers.
Mr. Sylvia was a communicant of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church.
Mr. Sylvia enjoyed lawn bowling at Hazelwood Park and was a New York Yankee and New York Giants fan. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Richard Sylvia of Port Orange, FL and David Sylvia of New Bedford; 4 grandchildren, Caitlin, Patrick, Owen and Emma.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Friday, March 27th at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, March 26th from 4-8 PM.
