TEWKSBURY: Hazel Lillian (Briand) Shaak, age 90, a Tewksbury resident for the past 9 years, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the Blaire House.
She was the wife of Paul H. Shaak, who died in 1981.
Born in East Boston on August 2, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Augustus and Jane (Monbouquette) Briand.
Hazel was raised in Medford, attended Medford schools and graduated from Medford High School.
A devout Catholic, Hazel was a communicant of Saint William’s Parish of Tewksbury.
Prior to her retirement in 1970, she was employed as a medical secretary at the Malden Hospital, where she worked for 20 years.
She loved knitting and crochet and according to her family, she knitted afghans and slippers for all her family members.
Hazel is survived by one son, Paul H. Shaak, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Reading,; three daughters, Sally M. Anastasio and her husband Anthony of Holbrook, Ann Marie Crockett and her husband Bruce of Tewksbury and Susan A. Conley of Salem, NH; one brother, Alfred Briand and his wife Angel of Biddeford, ME; one sister, Ethel Thomas of Needham; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Pat Briand, Herbert Briand, Margaret Kane, Elizabeth Crimmings and Katherine Lewis.
Calling hours Sunday, March 22nd, from 4-8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral Monday, March 23rd, at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by her Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Following cremation, interment will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the N.E. Hospice at Blaire House, 10 Erlin Terrace, Tewksbury, MA 01876 are suggested.
