WEBSTER – William P. Davern, 90, of 79 North Main St., died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Hubbard Regional Hospital after an illness. His wife of 61 years, Helen M. (Evanski) Davern, died on November 6, 2008.
He leaves a son, Michael P. and his wife Gail Davern of Dudley and a daughter, Elizabeth Mezzoni of Webster; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Mezzoni & his wife Alicia, Carolyn Mezzoni and Gregory Mezzoni; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary E. Davern, who died in 1970 and by his brother James Davern.
He was born in Webster on April 15, 1918, a son of James F. and Frances B. (Pugesek) Davern and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Saint Louis High School and attended Becker Junior College.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and remained in the reserves for 15 years.
Mr. Davern was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Webster for 41 years. He retired in 1981 to spend time with his grandchildren.
Bill loved sports. In high school, he served as the assistant baseball and basketball coach to the late (and great) John McCormac. He played semi-pro football for the Webster Redwings and the Colonial Club Football Team. He helped organize the Webster Softball League as well as the Webster Little League, serving as its player agent for many years.
He was a communicant of Saint Louis Church and was once the president of the former Holy Name Society. He was a member and former president of the St. Louis High School Alumni Association. He belonged to the Webster-Dudley American Legion, Post #184, the Disabled American Veterans and the Booster Athletic Club.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 21, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main St., with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Saint Louis Church, 14 Lake Street. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Dudley. The Webster-Dudley Veterans Council will perform the military honors. A calling hour will be from 8:15 to 9:15 AM, Saturday, March 21, in the funeral home.
