MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA: Arnold H. Lowe, 84, died peacefully, Wednesday, March 11, 2009 after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Ruth Elaine (Arvidson) Lowe, to whom he was married for fifty two years.
Mr. Lowe was born in Norwell on December 30, 1924, the only son of the late Tom and Eva (Whatoff ) Lowe, who immigrated from England in the early 1920’s. Mr. Lowe’s family moved to Rocky Neck in Gloucester when he was a child. He was educated in the Gloucester school system before joining the U.S. Navy in 1942 at the age of 17. He was a combat veteran of World War II, having served on the U.S.S. Fanshaw Bay during the Second Battle for the Philippine Sea – the Battle for Leyte Gulf as well as in other battles in the Pacific. He was a member of the Amaral-Bailey Post #113, Manchester American Legion.
After his honorable discharge from the service, Mr. Lowe attended school to become a dental technician, a profession he practiced until his illness in 2008. He was an avid sports fan and loved playing golf. Mr. Lowe had a special fondness for dogs and enjoyed watching them at play on Singing Beach.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Sue (Lowe) Centner and her husband, Al of Derry, NH. He leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss his generous spirit, sense of humor and unwavering loyalty. He was also predeceased by two infant daughters, Patricia and Janet Lowe.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 21st in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester-by-the-Sea at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. John Hughes officiating. A memorial celebration will be held in his honor in the near future in Gloucester. In support of his fellow veterans, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Lowe’s name to The Soldier’s Home, 90 Crest Ave., Chelsea, MA 02150.
