Cornelius J. "Dodie" Murphy Jr., a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at his home in Charlestown after a 8 week courageous battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.
Dodie was born in Boston on January 26, 1939. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Charlestown High School. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1957 and served his country until he was discharged with the rank of Private First Class in 1959. Dodie worked on the Boston waterfront as a longshoreman and was a member of their union Local # 799 International Longshoreman's Association. He retired in 2002 after 48 years of service. Dodie was a member of The Halligan Club and the Cronin Club both of Charlestown.
Dodie is the beloved husband of Helen (Doherty) Murphy. He is the devoted father of Bernard Devlin and his wife Heidi and Donna Prince and her husband Willy all of Wilmington. He is the loving "Pa" to Aileane Doherty, Cassie Doherty, Will Prince, Hannah Devlin and Sean Devlin. He is the beloved brother of James Murphy of York Beach, Maine, Mickey Murphy of Wilmington and Renie Murphy of Vero Beach, Florida. He is the beloved son of the late Cornelius J. and Mary E.(Goggin). He is also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, March 15, 2009, from 1 - 5 p.m. followed by his Funeral Service at 5 p.m. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown. Cremation will take place following his funeral service.
