Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Dorothy J. (Bartlo) Hayes, 88, of Rockport Road, passed away early Thursday morning, March 12, 2009, following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Oscar W. Hayes, who died in December of 2006. They had shared sixty-six years of marriage.
Born in Gloucester on March 27, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Alice E. (Mitchell) Bartlo. She was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1937.
After raising her sons, she began working outside the home, first for Helen Davis at her beauty salons, followed by Mighty Mac and ultimately retiring from the former O’Donnell-Usen Fisheries. She was a member of the Seafood Retirees.
An extremely active life-member of the Gloucester Drum and Bugle Corps, now the Gloucester Fraternity Club, she could often be found working in the kitchen and at all the Crownings.
Dot was the consummate hostess whose Long Beach door was open to all. Her warm smile and welcoming way for all who entered will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth M. Hayes and Wayne B. Hayes, her daughter-in-law, Pauline (Miles) Hayes, eleven grandchildren, Donna Sutherland, Michael Hayes, Gina, wife of Carl Erickson, Donald O. “Duke” Hayes, Jr., Brittney Hayes, Kaylie Hayes, Brodie Hayes, Kenneth M. Hayes, Jr., Timothy W. Hayes, Christian N., husband of Kayla D. Hayes and Kenneth M. “Tres” Hayes, III, many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by her son, Donald O. Hayes, her daughter-in-law, Madelyn M. (Spinney) Hayes and her sister, Pearl D. Gaspar.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday morning in the Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 9:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday afternoon in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 2 – 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 or VNA Care Network, 5 Federal St., Danvers, MA 01923. Interment will be held in the Beechbrook Cemetery.
