Irvin Seymour “Red” Maynard was born on November 14, 1924 in Preston, CT and passed away on March 7th 2009 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. Irvin in his last moments was surrounded by his wife Louise Sophia Maynard and his loving family.
He grew up in Ledyard in the care of his paternal uncle, Irvin F. Maynard. Throughout his life, Red has earned the affection and respect of everyone with whom he interacted. He was known for his unfailing gentlemanliness, his respect of others, his powerful work ethic and his steadfastness in his commitment to care for others. He was a skilled farmer, carpenter and mechanic.
To his family, he was a man of few words but powerful actions. His love and care were born out by endless small kindnesses. He still blushed when his cheek was kissed by a family member. Nothing was ever too humble or too far beneath him if it benefited his family. If there was a need, he would respond with no expectation of recompense. He was a kind, thoughtful, intelligent, honest, unique, humble man with innate civility. He was a hard working man who enjoyed and valued work. He worked at Dart&Bogue/UBS for most of his adult life.
Despite the failings of his body, he maintained an unbelievable degree of independence and self sufficiency; he was a living example to others of the staying power of determination.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years Louise Stark Maynard, whom he married at the age of 45. She was his childhood sweetheart and he adored her. He re-declared his love for her with this dying breaths. That love is fully reciprocated by Louise. He will be deeply missed by those who are still here: Erika Striebel, Jeffrey Carver, Myriam Charpentier, John Striebel, Nathan Martinez, Raquel and Colby Ewing, Luke Martin, Sunny Martin, Noah Carver, Caleb and Elizabeth Ewing, neighbors who have cared for him and his life-long friends and acquaintances.
“Dad, thank you for loving us, caring for us and for letting us love you. We will miss you Dad, Grandpa, Red ...”
His family will greet relatives and friends at Friendship Community Church, Ledyard on Thursday from 5-7pm where a service will be held on Friday at 11am. Burial will be at Quakertown Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, and to honor “Red”, please perform an act of kindness for someone in need.
