Obituary

Anna Maria (Nelissen) Barber, born in Maastricht, the Netherlands died after a brief illness at the William W. Backus Hospital on Sunday morning, March 8, 2009. She became ill on February 28th and experienced a rapid decline in bodily functions culminating in her passing away at 1:27am on March 8, 2009.

Anna met her husband Charles W. Barber while he was stationed in Europe with the U.S. Air Force Security Service. After a long courtship they were married in Maastricht on July 31, 1970 and returned to the United States on Christmas Eve, 1970.

After living with relatives for a short time, they moved into the Gate House on Masons Island, Mystic. They remained in the Gate house for fifteen years during which time Anna got to know just about everyone on the island. While living in the Gate House, Anna was always there to help the people on the island in any way that she could.

Anna moved to the village of Poquetanuck in Preston where she made many friends. She was an avid Bingo player, playing at just about every firehouse that offered Bingo.

Recently, she was employed by Companions & Homemakers of Norwich where she visited and assisted elderly residents in the area. Anna loved and was loved by many and she will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society,106 Franklin Commons, Rte. 32, Franklin, CT 06254.
