Obituary

Katherine F. (Saunders) Sullivan of Wilmington, Delaware died at home on Friday January 4th, 2002.She was the wife of the late Daniel Sullivan, and the daughter of the late Captain Herman R. and Matilda M. (O'Reilly) Saunders.

Katherine Saunders Sullivan was born on August 12, 1923 in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts; lived in Washington Township, NJ.; before retiring to Marlton, NJ. in 1985 and moving to Wilmington, Delaware in 1999.

Mrs. Sullivan was a member of Saint Mary Magdalen Church in Wilmington. She was a graduate of Holy Family High School in New Bedford and the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston. In 1926 her father, a New Bedford fishing captain, had a new fishing vessel constructed in Thomaston, Maine, and christened the vessel the Katherine F. Saunders in her honor. During World War II, the vessel was commandeered by the U.S. government and used as a mine sweeper in the North Atlantic. It later sunk in a storm off the coast of North Carolina.

She was formerly employed in the business office of Bergen Pines County Hospital in Paramus, NJ.

Survivors include seven children Zita Mobayed of Oakland, NJ.; Barbara O'Brien of Cherry Hill, NJ.; Daniel Sullivan of Florida, NY.; Kathleen Sullivan of Maplewood, NJ.; Ellen Sullivan of Wilmington, DE.; Sally Sullivan of White Plains, NY.; and Peter Sullivan of Audobon, NJ.; 6 brothers, Herman R. Saunders, Paul F. Saunders, Richard T. Saunders, and Thomas F. Saunders, all of New Bedford, Jack Saunders of South Dartmouth, and Daniel J. Saunders of Fall River; 2 sisters, Mary M. Welch of Lakeville and Joan M. Liarikos of Rochester; eleven grandchildren, and more than sixty nieces and nephews.She was the sister of the late Albert E. Saunders.

Friends may call from 6:00 to 9:00 PM on Monday January 7th at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE.

Her Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday January 8th at Saint Mary Magdalen Church in Wilmington. Burial will be in Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, New Jersey
