Irving S. Smith, 93 of East Walpole died March 3 in Caritas Norwood Hospital. He was the husband of the late Irene M. (Sullivan) Smith who died in 1984.
Born in Walpole, November 29, 1915, the son of the late Carl and Mary (Costello) Smith, Mr. Smith was a lifelong Walpole resident.
A graduate of Walpole High School, Mr. Smith had worked as a custodian for the Walpole Public Schools for 10 years before retiring. He had previously worked for the Baystate Iron Foundry in Norwood for many years.
Mr. Smith served in the Army during World War II as member of the 104th Regiment of the 26th Yankee Division, and attained the rank of Private First Class.
Mr. Smith enjoyed woodworking and gardening but being with his family was the thing that gave Mr. Smith the most pleasure.
He is survived by his children, Jean Shuffleton of Mansfield, Kevin Smith of Concord, Ann Herman of Walpole and Karen Johnson of Raleigh, NC.
He was the brother of the late John Victor Smith, Anna Smith, George Smith, Thomas Smith, Edmund “Ted” Smith and Augustus Smith.
He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, March 7 from the Ginley Funeral Home, 892 Main St. in Walpole at 8:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church at 9:00 a.m.
Burial will be in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4-8 p.m.
