Aristides Linhares Lima, 83, of Dartmouth died Monday March 2, 2009 peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Olivia (Linhares) Lima; they had been married for 51 years.
Born in Ribeira Quente, Sao Miguel, Açores, the son of the late Luis Linhares deDeus and Maria deConceiçao Lima Linhares, he moved to New Bedford in 1969 and had lived in Dartmouth since 1974. Mr. Lima was formerly employed as a machine operator for Dartmouth Finishing Company.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
He served as a Sergeant in the Portuguese Army. He enjoyed cooking with his wife, telling a good joke, and above all, spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed visiting Sao Miguel.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Gloria Linhares Pamplona and her husband Kenneth of New Bedford, John Linhares Lima and his wife Judith of Dartmouth, Nelson Linhares Lima and his wife Ronna of Fairhaven, and Joseph Linhares Lima and his wife Laurie of Dartmouth; four sisters, Idalina Linhares DeLima and her husband Abel of Acushnet, Armenia Lima Linhares Machado and her husband Francisco of New Bedford, Arminda Lima Linhares of Montreal, Canada; and Maria deConceiçao Linhares Teixeira of Furnas, Sao Miguel; a sister-in-law, Berta Couto Linhares deDeus of Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel; seven grandchildren, Jason Pamplona, Kristie Costa and her husband Jeremy, Bradford Pamplona and his wife Linda, and Adam, Alexandra, Colby-Jae, and Hannah-Min Lima; two great grandchildren, Ava Grace Costa and Alyssa Marie Pamplona; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Abilio Linhares deDeus and Luis Linhares deDeus and the brother-in-law of the late Hermano Teixeira.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 3-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
