George Edward Carpenter, 91, passed on Feb. 27, 2009, surrounded by Elsie, his wife of 65 years, and family. Born in Southbridge, MA. George served in the Army Air Corp during WW II and retired with 25 years of service from the Providence Gas Company where he worked as a heating and cooling technician. He and Elsie raised four sons in Providence and Cranston, RI.
In addition to his wife Elsie and brother Robert R. of Stafford Springs, CT, George is survived by four sons: William A. of Cranston, Robert R. of Fairfax, VA, Neal G. of Cumberland, Steven P. of Harrisonburg, VA, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by four siblings: Viola Converse, Harold, Ruth Boutwell, and Doris White and granddaughter Michelle.
George served in leadership at First Presbyterian Church in Providence, which became Faith Presbyterian Church, where Elsie remains active. He was a resident at Cedar Crest in the Alzheimer’s wing for the past two years.
Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at 10 am on Tuesday March 3 at Faith Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Visitation Monday 5-7pm in the Anderson Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville.
