Mary T. Sawyer 85years, of Pelham and Sandwich, MA died Thursday, February 19, 2009 after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Dr. F Miles Sawyer. She and her husband spent their summers for many years at their home in Sandwich. Mrs. Sawyer was born in Brockton and was a graduate of Brockton High School and the University of Massachusetts class of 1947 with a Bachelors’ of Science. She was a member of the committee that saw Bill S-533 passed, which changed the status of the Massachusetts State College to The University of Massachusetts. She worked as a Bacteriologist in Davis, CA and for the Mass Fish and Wildlife Dept. in Boston before retiring as a homemaker which allowed her to assist her husband in his work as a Professor of Food Science for the University of Massachusetts.
Mrs. Sawyer was a very engaging person who loved people and made friends quickly and easily and was generous to all.
She leaves two brothers, Bernard O’Reilly of Osterville, MA and Myles O’Reilly of Bowie, MD. Although Mary had no children of her own she was mother to her 38 nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Monday at 8AM followed by a funeral mass in Christ The King Parish/ St. Colman Church Brockton at 9AM.
