Obituary

Nellie Legnos, age 89, of West Shore Ave., Groton Long Point passed peacefully in her sleep on February 18th.

She was born on February 1st, 1920 in New Britain, CT to Peter and Barbara Masonis. She is succeeded by her loving husband of 67 years, John Legnos, their three children, Deitra Bardon, Peter, Jay and wife Jackie, and her six grandchildren, Kyle, Ali, Hunter, Jessica, Jillian, and John.

Nellie was married to John in 1942, which was the same year she graduated from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing. She was on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Opera Guild and Friends of the Hartford Ballet. She ran several major fundraisers for the American Cancer Society and continued philanthropic initiatives throughout her life.

As a business woman, she was successful in the acquisition and operation of investment real estate as well as other businesses over the years. Most notably she was the organization, construction, and operation of the Avon Convalescent Hospital in Avon, CT.

In her later years, Nellie was very active in planning and organizing social events at the Groton Long Point Yacht Club. She was an avid golfer and a member of the New London Country Club, Admirals Cove in Jupiter, FL, and the Yacht and Country Club of Stuart, FL. She was also an avid bridge player at the Groton Long Point Yacht Club.

For many years Nellie and John enjoyed winters on their sport fishing boat, “Big Chief”, in Walkers Cay and Freeport in the Bahamas. They spent this time going fishing and cruising with friends and family. She always loved cruising with her husband John.

Nellie was a lively, vibrant woman with an exceptional spirit and great generosity. Her love for life, strength, and willingness to take on challenges that appeared impossible has been an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. We will all miss her very much.

Please join the family at Clark Hall in the Groton Long Point Yacht Club, 46 Beach Road, Groton Long Point on March 13th at 4:00pm to celebrate the memory of her exceptional life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Development Fund, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, CT 06320.
