Obituary

Gladys E. Savory passed away on Friday, February 13, 2009 at Pleasant Valley Nursing Center, with her daughter Linda and her granddaughter Rebecca by her side. She was 96. Gladys was born on May 12, 1912, in Searsmont, Maine, to Jesse and Rosina (Nichols) Hills. She was a resident of Derry, NH for the last 38 years, having previously resided in Maine and Massachusetts.

She was married to the late E. Malcolm Savory. During World War II, Gladys went to work at General Electric to aid the war effort, while her husband Malcolm fought in Europe with Patton’s Third Army. After the war, Gladys worked as a nurse and homemaker. She shared forty-six years of marriage with Malcolm, until his passing.

Gladys’ hobbies included reading, cooking, and baking, as well as sewing and crocheting for her family and friends. She also enjoyed cheering on her Boston Red Sox, and one of her favorite memories was meeting Ted Williams at a Ladies’ Day at Fenway Park. Gladys was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 1617, and the East Hampstead Union Church.

Gladys is survived by a daughter, Linda Rutter and her husband Michael, of Derry; and by a granddaughter, Rebecca Rutter, also of Derry. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Virginia Hebert and her husband Richard, of Connecticut; two step-grandsons; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Gladys was predeceased by a son Walter, who died as an infant; a step-grandson; and her beloved husband, E. Malcolm Savory. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery in the spring at the arrangement of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the VFW Post 1617, 18 Railroad Ave., Derry, NH 03038. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry is handling arrangements.
