FRANKLIN—Frederick W. Griffin 97, of Franklin, and a former longtime resident of Roslindale, died Thursday February 12, 2009 at the Madonna Manor Nursing Home in North Attleboro, following an illness. He was the husband of the late Rita F. (Davis) Griffin who died in 1994.
Born February 1, 1912 in Boston, a son of the late John and Ann (McClutchy) Griffin, he had lived in Roslindale for over 90 years before moving to Franklin 3 years ago.
Until his retirement many years ago, Mr. Griffin worked as a custodian for the Boston Public School system.
He served in the United States Army during World War II, and attained the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and was honorably discharged in 1946.
A sports fan at heart, he enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and was a member of the Boston Lodge of Elks #10, and the American Legion Post #36 in Roslindale.
Mr. Griffin enjoyed spending time with his daughter, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by a daughter Jo Ann Ahern of Franklin, and P-PA to 3 grandchildren Stacey M. Columb, Paula J. Ahern and Wendy H. Bryant.
He is also survived by his great grandchildren Riley A. and Ava J. Bryant, Kaitlyn M. Dion and Brody G. Columb.
He was the brother of the late John Griffin Jr., Herbert W. Griffin, Parker Griffin, Gertrude Becker, Mary D. Procopio and Rosemary L. Griffin.
Funeral services and interment will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in April.
