Michael J. Scollin, age 40, of Dracut , died unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009 at Saints Medical Center in Lowell . For 18 years, he was the longtime companion of Melissa J. Hines.
He was born in Lowell on August 7, 1968, beloved son of Doris (Laurin) Scollin of Lowell and the late Joseph Scollin. Michael attended St. Louis Grammar School and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Lowell. Involved in many sports as a teenager, he was a star basketball player on the St. Joseph's High team. While growing up in the Centralville section of the city in the early 80's, he was part of the All-Star Team with the Centralville Baseball League that traveled out of state to compete in many memorable games. One included a two grand slam game by Micheal which many friends would still remind him of to this day.
Michael was a hardworking and a very dedicated employee to his employers. He was employed in the flooring industry for over 20 years having worked with several companies in the Lowell area including Zerba Carpet in N. Chelmsford and Durkins and Federal Carpet in Lowell . He also is well known at R & M Liquors in the Centalville section of Lowell, a place he loved to devote his time along with establishing many long-lasting friendships there for more than 26 years.
Michael was a fan of all the New England sports teams, especially the Boston Celtics. The Centralville section of Lowell was a special place to Michael all his life, as he was well known to this community. Mike loved Centralville and Centralville loved "their" Mike. He also was a member of the Centralville Social Club. Simply put, Michael was a big-hearted gentleman, who always loved to make someone smile that he came in contact with. He was always a "do anything for you" type of guy. He will be very sadly missed by many.
Besides his mother Doris of Lowell and his longtime companion, Melissa with whom he resided with in Dracut, he is survived by his 16 year old son, Corey A. Hines of Dracut; a sister and a brother-in-law, Linda and David Bassett of Lowell; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward J. and Lisa (Sodre' ) Scollin of Lowell; his nieces and nephews, Shawna, Brandon, Lucas, Desiree, Paul, Bianca, Katelyn, Savanna and Joseph; two uncles, Roland Laurin of Chelmsford and Normand Laurin of Lowell; also many dear friends including Michael and Joanna Rodrigue of NH and several cousins that he loved very much.
Relatives and friends may call at the M. R. LAURIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St., Lowell on Thursday, Feb 12 from 4 to 8pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary Church, Chelmsford. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery .
