Obituary

Mary Isabel “Marybel” Urquhart (McCall) Lucas of Needham died on Saturday February 7, 2009 at the Newton Wellesley Hospital. Born in Sidney, Nova Scotia, April 3, 1934, Marybel moved to Montreal as a young girl where she lived until her move to Needham in 1968. She attended the Netherwood School in Rothesay, New Brunswick and Bishop Strachan School in Toronto after which she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in 1954. Marybel was a tireless volunteer in the Needham Community. She lectured on Needham’s history in the Needham school system, was a lifelong member and past president of the Glover Hospital Aid Assoc, was active in the hospital coffee shop as well as Meals on Wheels. Later she became a docent of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, conducting tours and serving on various committees. She was chairman of the Museum’s Senior Associates between 1993 and 1995. She was a keen tennis player, golfer and skier and enjoyed traveling. Marybel was also a member of the Needham Pool and Racket Club and the Needham Tennis Club. She is survived by her husband Anthony “Tony” Lucas of Needham, three sons; Thomas of Colchester, VT and his partner Carolyn Cooke; James and his wife Trish, their two daughters, Katherine and Charlotte; and John and his wife Marla and their two sons, Stephen and Matthew all of Wellesley. In addition she is survived by her sister Patricia A. Shupe of Beaconsfield, Quebec and her brother Thomas Henry “Harry” McCall of Halifax, Nova Scotia as well as several nieces and nephews and their families. A memorial service will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church 1132 Highland Ave. Needham on Saturday February 21st at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
