Obituary

WORCESTER-Arthur I. Longwell, 83, of 61 Trowbridge Circuit died Monday, May 26th in University Commons after an illness. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Gladys E. (Mahan) Longwell; 3 sons, Arthur R. Longwell of Worcester, Ronald I. Longwell of Ballston Lake, NY and Malcolm H. Longwell of Oxford; 2 daughters Joan M. Beauchemin of Marlboro and Susan J. Longwell of Hardwick; a brother, Malcolm C. Longwell of Brookfield; 2 sisters, Virginia R. Seger of Ahwanee, CA and June H. Stewart of Biddeford, ME; 15 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was born in Worcester the son of Harry and Harriett (Williams) Longwell and lived here all his life. He attended South High School. He was an Army veteran of WWII serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. Mr. Longwell worked as a furnace man for Johnson Steel & Wire for many years retiring in 1981. Previously, he managed his family’s business, Longwell Trucking Company. After he retired he drove the bus for the Worcester Science Center. He was a member of the Masons for 59 years and belonged to the Aletheia Grotto in West Boylston, the Athelstan Lodge and the York Rite Bodies of Worcester. Mr. Longwell was a Worcester historian and belonged to and volunteered at the Worcester Historical Museum. He wrote a historical column “Longwell’s Corner” for the former Webster House Spirit.

The funeral will be Friday, May 30th at 11:00 AM in O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 29th from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or contributions may be made to the Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
